The World Darts Championship takes place throughout the month of January and follows that of the PDC event played over Christmas and the beginning of the new year.
The fallout of the BDO to form the PDC has meant that the two tournaments are designed not to clash, although players from one tour will not be able to play the other tour within the same calendar year as part of their rules.
In total there are 32 players that take part in the World Darts Championship proper. These are made up of 24 players that are ranked in accordance with the BDO world rankings and then a series of reginal table qualifiers, regional play off qualifiers and Bridlington playoff qualifiers, battling it out for the remining 8 spots.
The final round of preliminary matches for the 8 players all take place at the main event, being played amongst or before the first round proper.
These preliminary round matches are played as the best of 5 sets and can include a wide range of players from numerous countries. Most recently, these have included the likes of Turkey, Sweden, Australia and even the Nation of Brunel.
The matches increase in longevity as the tournament progresses. The first round starts as best of 5, before working through to best of 7 in the second, best of 9 in the quarter finals, best of 11 in the semi-finals and best of 13 in the final.
As players are able to set about a rhythm over the longer periods, games are often much more competitive and in turn, are much more exciting.
The maximum capacity of the venue is almost though this will be reduced to around half that figure during the Darts World Championship to allow for seating.
The host venue for thirty-three years between and was the Lakeside Country Club, based in Frimley Green, which is in Surrey, England.
The building is, unsurprisingly, boarded by a lake and was a really nice spot for both dart fans and just general vistors.

Van Gerwen regained his status as world champion at the start of when defeating the Flying Scotsman but suffered one of the great all-time shocks in the follow year's semi-finals, at the hands of debutant Rob Cross.
Adams held on to take victory in the 13th and deciding set, to win the title that had eluded him for 14 years. In the tournament was staged at the Indigo at The O2 in London.
Wayne Warren became the oldest player ever to win a world title. Since the breakaway of the PDC players, there has been much debate about the relative merits of the players within each organisation.
The debate often focuses on the three-dart averages of players in matches. Since the BDO Championship started in , there have been 21 occasions where a player has achieved a three-dart average in excess of during a match.
Keith Deller was the first player to achieve an average of , in the quarter-final of against John Lowe, although he lost the match.
It was not until Phil Taylor's semi-final of that another player managed a average. Raymond van Barneveld has achieved the feat six times.
The women's World Championship started at the Lakeside in and Trina Gulliver has won ten championships.
She managed a long run of 13 consecutive matches without dropping a single set, which started the semi-final of and ended in the final of In , Anastasia Dobromyslova won the championship, becoming the first player other than Trina Gulliver to take the title.

The tournament was broadcast in the UK by BBC Sport on television for nearly 40 years, from its inception in until the decision to drop the coverage after the tournament.
